Have you ever wondered what your last name means? Or why you have a last name? Well, if you are Jewish and your ancestors are from Europe, it’s because between the 1800-1900’s the government made Jews buy last names. Names like Goldberg (mountain of gold) were given to the rich, but for those who couldn’t afford names, they were given names like Eselkopf (ass’s head) or Fischbaum (fish tree).
