As we all know, the combined threats of war, persecution and terrorism in recent years have led to a refugee crisis unparalleled in modern history.  The world’s displaced population has nearly tripled in the past decade alone.

As Jews, we are uniquely attuned to the plight of people who have been forced from their homes to seek new lives in faraway lands. The principle of “welcoming the stranger” is repeated 35 times in the Torah, more than any other commandment, for we were “strangers in the land of Egypt.”  This commandment goes hand-in-hand with our commitment to Tikkun Olam, or healing the world.

Congregation Solel is co-sponsoring a family through RefugeeOne, and as part of this effort we must raise $12,000 to aid in resettling a family for the first six months.  We also need a cohort of Solel members to become actively involved with the family, including mentors, tutors, and people willing to commit to weekly or bi-weekly visits.

Please use the form on this page to make a donation now. If you would like to assist in this effort, or if you have any questions, please contact Solel congregant Alan Greene at aig0220@comcast.net or Michael Wax at michael@bebercamp.com.

Facts About Refugees

A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee or leave their country due to persecution, conflict, or war.

There are more than 22 million refugees in the world!

The U.S. is authorized to accept 45,000 refugees this year, but, in fact, is likely to accept many thousands fewer.

RefugeeOne is expected to resettle more than 400 refugees this year.

Refugees come from many countries around the world such as Burma, Iraq, Bhutan, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Ethiopia, Ukraine and Afghanistan.

We are turning to you, our community, to come together in order to combine our contributed time, efforts, and funds to make this support for this family possible. Collectively, with individuals and families giving to this goal, we can make it a reality.
